The Federal Work Study Program

Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study.

Being awarded Federal Work-Study does not guarantee a job. Accepting the Federal Work-Study funds is just the first step. Students are then required to apply for, and interview for positions, just like any other job.

Here’s a quick overview of Federal Work-Study:

  • It provides part-time employment while enrolled in school.
  • It’s available to undergraduate, and graduate students with financial need.
  • It’s available to full-time or part-time students.
  • To be considered, you must mark ‘yes’ to the question on your FAFSA that asks if you are interested in student employment (work study program).

Work Study FAQs

The Federal Work-Study Program emphasizes employment in civic education and work related to your course of study whenever possible. USK has specific jobs designated as a part of the Federal Work-Study Program.

Both. Most of the work study jobs are on campus, however, some jobs may require you to work temporarily at a different site. (Off campus jobs will usually be at an athletic facility.)

You will earn at least the current California minimum wage ($13.00/hour). Each eligible USK student can earn up to $3,000 in one school year as a part of the Federal Work Study program. .

You will be paid by the hour. The school will issue you a paycheck at least once a month. You also have the option to designate earned monies to pay for your USK education-related institutional charges such as tuition and fees.

No. The amount you earn cannot exceed your total Federal Work-Study award. When assigning work hours, the school will consider your class schedule and your academic progress. The general USK policy is to allow Federal Work Study students to earn up to $3000 per school year. Jobs are for one semester only.

Although USK fully plans on opening the campus in the fall, there is a chance that the county health department will make the choice to not allow schools to open. If this happens, then these jobs will most likely be temporarily postponed until school is allowed to be in session.
